Alhamdulillah, on 15th until 19th Mei 2009, 14 excos of Students’ Representative Council IIUM attended Konvesyen Kebangsaan Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar IPTA 2009 kali ke-3 (National Convention of Students’ Representative Council of Public Institution of Higher Education 2009) at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Johor. The programme that was organized by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) with the theme ‘Mahasiswa teras pembangunan modal insan cemerlang’ gathered all SRCs from all IPTA in Malaysia.

The 5 days programme that was officially launched by Y.B Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin, Minister of Higher Education objectively to expose the students’ leaders on national policies, integration and also leadership. Besides, this programme is a platform for the students’ leaders to develop networking, sharing vision and ideas, and also to develop students’ leaders with excellent and strong characters of leadership.

Some of the activities during the convention were academic forum, sessions with scholars, session with MOHE, paper work presentation, community services, discussion, resolution presentation, and Bicara Siswa forum of RTM. For the paperwork presentation, the presentations that were presented by representatives from various universities were based on four main topics which were academic, leadership, character building, and economic and enterprise. Some of the paperwork presented were ‘Revolusi Mahasiswa dan ‘Politik Baru’ Malaysia, Burnout among Student Leaders in Mara University of Technology (UiTM), Pemerkasaan Mutu dan Kualiti Pendidikan Sekolah-Sekolah Luar Bandar, Negeri Sabah, Menjana Keunggulan Sahsiah Mahasiswa di IPTA: Melalui Pendidikan Agama secara Berterusan, Pembangunan Usahawan Siswa Menerusi Kes Perundingan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Terhadap Enterpris Kecil and so on.

We also had a session with Deputy Minister II of Higher Education, Y.B. Dato’ Saifuddin Abdullah. During the session, lots of welfare issues of the students were raised up to the Y.B and hopefully action will be taken to cattle the issues that involved the students. Moreover, all the SRCs were grouped into several groups based on our post in SRC to discuss on the resolutions based on 4 topics; academic, leadership, character building, and economic and enterprise. These resolutions will be presented to the Ministry of Higher Education for further actions.

Futhermore, we also involved in community services where we were sent into several villages in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat. Some of us celebrated Teachers Day with school childrens, some helped villagers to decorate the village, and many more. We also enjoyed visiting interesting places in the villagers such as lamb farm, keli ponds, and kerepek factory.

This programme benefits the SRCs where we were able to broaden our view, share the ideas, voice up students’ problems, come up with resolutions and also built our networking with other universities. Hopefully, all resolutions that have been made will be taken into actions by the MOHE and also by the SRCs themselves. May all the experiences during the convention will bring benefits to all. InsyaAllah.
